AFRICA/IVORY COAST - Bishops in plenary assembly: health, social and political crisis at the center

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - The ongoing health crisis, with spiritual, pastoral, economic, social and political challenges: is the central theme of the 116th Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ivory Coast, which began on 26 July 2020 in the diocesan center of Yamoussoukro and will last until 31 July. The assembly was initially scheduled for May in the diocese of Yopougon but, and for reasons related to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed. This is a special gathering due to its elective nature: the Bishops will elect the new president of the episcopal conference and will also proceed to the election of new presidents of the episcopal commissions and, if necessary, of new executive secretaries of the episcopal commissions.
During the assembly one will listen to the report of the outgoing President of the Conference, and the reports of the various episcopal commissions, while among other topics of interest, the creation of the Catholic Academy, the examination of the health, social and political situation will be discussed.
While presidential elections are scheduled for October 2020, the Catholic Church and religious communities are called upon to make a contribution to the nation, while political tensions in the country show no sign of diminishing. Bishops have always promoted peace, reconciliation and social cohesion. (S.S.) (Agenzia Fides, 27/7/2020)
